Housing Solutions of New York (HSNY) is looking for a Director of Social Services to join the team!

This Position Will Be Based: Bronx, Queens, NY

Primary Function/Purpose:

The Director of Social Services provides clinical leadership and oversight to a Social Services team including Case Managers, Housing specialist, and clinical interns. Additionally, the DSS will participate in or lead interdisciplinary teams including psychologists, psychiatrists, substance abuse counselors, medical professionals, representatives of government agencies, and other individuals whose goal is to help families become self-sufficient, integrated into the community, and housing independent. Candidate is responsible for implementing program activities related to required training and following through independently in accordance with established procedures.

Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Social Services team in all aspects of service provision to our clients.
  • Identify, evaluate, and establish service linkages with community-base providers.
  • Prepare for, participate in, and or lead any internal or DHS client case conferences.
  • Conduct weekly or bi-weekly supervision with all direct reports.
  • Provide supportive counseling to children and families.
  • Partner with the Housing Specialist in identifying appropriate housing resources.
  • Participate in unit inspections, assessing client household skills and ADL’s and leading the team to respond appropriately and timely to any clinical concerns.
  • Coordinate the admission and discharge process of shelter residents.
  • Enforce DHS/HSNY rules, policies, and guidelines by proactively outreaching and counseling clients.
  • Participate in the reporting, investigation, and documenting of all significant incidents to the Shelter Director, BPHN Executive Team members, and all appropriate reporting agencies (DHS, ACS, NYPD, etc.), as required by all applicable regulations and laws.
  • Compile and contribute statistical data to the Shelter Director (or anyone / he designates) in support of internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and submit case summaries and reports both internally and to regulatory agencies.
  • Respond timely to requests for information from BPHN, DHS and or any external entity in consultation with the Shelter Director.
  • Participate in: weekly or bi-weekly supervision with the Shelter Director; weekly all-staff meetings; monthly Community (Residential) meetings, some of which may extend your work day by an hour.
  • Mediate conflicts between direct reports and any program staff members, or staff and residents.
  • Assume all duties as required in the absence of the Shelter Director.
  • Assure that performance evaluations of direct reports are completed and reviewed annually or at the end of the probationary period for new hires.
  • Ensure that case files are organized, and client records are accurate, current, and meet all DHS specifications.
  • Develop and revise clinical policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Identify and enroll staff in all appropriate trainings and conduct in-service trainings.
  • Facilitate participation of social services staffers in monthly community meetings.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and provide oversight of group activities designed to enhance the skills and self-esteem of program participants.
  • Works primarily with staff within own program. External contacts are infrequent and limited in scope.
  • Occasionally instructs or assists other employees. Sometimes delegates work assignments to others as directed by supervisor.


  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (required) LCSW or LMSW Preferred.


  • 2-4 years DHS/HRA case management experience.
  • Candidate must be proficient in written and oral English; written and oral Spanish proficiency is (strongly) preferred.
  • Some customer service and job readiness experience preferred.
  • Experience working with Department of Homeless Services (DHS).
  • Independently works through routine problems, determining solutions from established standards or procedures.

Related Skills or Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of at least one of the following service areas is required: homeless related issues, criminal justice, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse.
  • Prior training experience in CARES database is helpful. Knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint and other database programs.
  • Duties require a thorough understanding of principles, concepts and methodology associated with counseling occupation.
  • Employee must possess exceptional written and oral English communications skills; proficiency in written and oral Spanish is preferred.
  • Must be familiar with the DHS/HRA, CARES system.
  • Computer skills are necessary, including familiarity with MSWord and Excel.
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

Other Requirements:

Ability to travel locally using public transportation. Required to speak clearly and hear the spoken word well. Required on a regular basis to be prepared to utilize appropriate techniques to ensure consumers safety. Required to utilize near vision to read data and other documents including spreadsheets and reports in printed form or on computer screens. Regularly required to move fingers, wrist and arms in a repetitive manner to operate office equipment.

Salary is $65,000 - $75,000 Annually
