Residential Aide

About The Role

Residential Aides (RAs) provide direct support services to residents within DHS and EHP programs, including individuals and families receiving services through DHS and/or HRA/HASA. RAs play a critical role in fostering a safe, respectful, and structured environment that promotes stability and well-being for all residents. 

What You'll Do

  

  • Conduct hourly rounds, wellness checks, and routine inspections of resident rooms, bed areas, lockers, and common spaces.
  • Support a safe and respectful environment for residents, staff, and visitors by identifying and reporting concerns promptly.
  • Orient new residents upon intake and assist with room or bed assignments.
  • Monitor and document all residents, staff, and visitors entering and exiting the facility inclusive of the logbook, sign in/out sheets and the shift reports. 
  • Maintain accurate records including census reports, facility logs, and daily activity documentation, and in conjunction with operations, ensure that accurate data is transmitted to leadership/stakeholders.  
  • Prepare and submit shift reports and required program documentation at the end of each shift including but not limited to notifying the appropriate program staff of any issues that may affect the health and safety of clients or staff.
  • Complete intake-related documentation and support admissions, transfers, and move-outs as directed.
  • Assist with shelter bed or unit turnover to ensure readiness for new residents.
  • Prepare and submit detailed incident reports, including documentation of observations, actions taken, and involvement of external responders when applicable.
  • Maintain professional front desk coverage, greeting visitors and responding to inquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Ensure common areas, lobby, and building entrances remain orderly and free of loitering.
  • Distribute mail and communications to residents and staff as needed.
  • Support emergency preparedness activities, including fire drills and evacuations, and complete required documentation.
  • Enforce program guidelines, including curfew and room checks, in accordance with program policies.
  • Generate and submit all incident reports, which include detailed information of the incident and names of the first responders (i.e., police, ambulance, fire department, ACS, political parties, news). Completes reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities.
  • Attend staff meetings, training, and case conferences as required.
  • Secures premises and personnel by patrolling property, monitoring surveillance equipment, and access points.
  • Reports any security breaches, incidents, and other alarming behavior.
  • Ensure the lobby and front of the building is always cleared.
  • Prevent loitering in all areas within and surrounding the building.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the RA Manager, Program Director, Senior Director or designated leadership.

DHS

  • Assist with operational tasks such as meal distribution, documentation filing, and other programmatic needs as directed.
  • Record all daily census reports in the CARES system.
  • Generate and submit nightly rosters to funding sources.
  • Enforce the curfew regulation and facilitate room check and hourly rounds. Facilitate the food distribution process including receiving food delivery, light food preparation (no cooking), serving food, and disposal of trash. Implement all programmatic needs as necessary and outlined by the Director and Funding Sources.
  • Assists in the turnover of shelter beds and ensures readiness for occupancy by new clients as directed inclusive of bag and tag and storage of client belongings.
  • Generate and submit all incident reports, which include detailed information of the incident and names of the first responders (i.e., police, ambulance, fire department, ACS, political parties, news). Completes reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities. 
  • Implements all programmatic needs as necessary and outlined by the Director and Funding Sources.
  • Attends staff meetings, case conferences, supervisory and in-service training sessions.
  • Monitor the security of the entire facility implementing the surveillance system and rounds.
  • Document all residents, staff and visitors entering and exiting the building; complete census forms, report all incidents, and log all events in the Facility Log Book.
  • Facilitate resident new admissions and move outs.
  • Assist in coordinating and executing fire drills and emergency evacuations, including guiding residents to designated safe areas, ensuring full building clearance, and completing all required documentation and incident reports in accordance with established protocols.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or GED required; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • NYC Fire Guard for Shelters (F-02) – must be obtained within the first 30 days of employment; Mandated Reporter Training; First Aid and CPR Certification.

PREFERRED/ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

  • NYS Guard License (8-Hour Pre-Assignment and 16-Hour On-the-Job Training).
  • NYC Fire Safety Coordinator (F-24).

EXPERIENCE  

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in a residential shelter, social services, or housing setting required. Experience providing direct services to vulnerable populations strongly preferred.

SKILLS

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic computer systems.
  • Ability to document accurately and maintain organized records.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • Ability to remain calm and responsive in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail.

Locations: Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan and Queens

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, use hands or fingers, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, kneel, talk, or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10-15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and distance vision. Must be able to travel within the five boroughs of New York City using all modes of public transportation.
