Senior Director of Shelter Services

About The Role

The Senior Director of Shelter Services is a qualified and motivated individual who coordinates the daily program operations and administrative duties of the social services department to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in its daily workflow. S/he performs under the supervision of the Chief Program Officer. S/he also ensures that social services plans are performed according to long-term program goals and all NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and other related agency regulations. 

What You'll Do

  

  • Understands the “big picture” and carries out project management tasks and logistics to ensure completion of project activities within the portfolio on time and with fidelity to the goals.
  • Chairs the Incident Reporting Review Board to ensure timely submissions of incidents. 
  • Chairs the Shelter Performance Review Meeting to ensure chart compliance, scorecard expectations and agency program goals.
  • Provide direct supervision to Site Directors for all sites including commercial hotels.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Site Directors and the Operations Department.
  • Works closely with the Chief Program Officer, assists with all aspects of management, planning, and quality assurance requirements.
  • Leads and manages special projects that may include horizontal communication and resource exchange, development of operating plan goals and objectives.
  • Schedules and follow ups on Shelter Performance Review for all shelters that are falling below internal scorecard markers. 
  • Assists with the other program components, case management, educational/vocational assistance, counseling, housing prep, housing placement, and aftercare.
  • Files and retrieving program documents, records, and reports.
  • Compiles program-related data for analysis and decision-making within the Shelter Programs Portfolio.
  • Responds to general organization and/or programmatic inquiries.
  • Assesses inquiries directed to the CPO, determines proper course of action and delegation to appropriate individual(s) to manage.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Program Directors to promote a goal of program success.
  • Reviews case files corresponding to the checklist of required documents.
  • Assists with the transfer of clients/residents from program housing sites and/or sites.
  • Supports the verification of client/resident employment and educational activities.
  • Assists in securing required client documents from governmental and other agencies.
  • Assists Site Directors with the interview, hiring and training process for all new hires. 
  • Maintains awareness of new trends and developments in social services, adult education, employment/vocational, counseling, housing, and aftercare Interfacing with DHS and other related agencies.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of resident, staff, and agency information
  • Supports program staff in assigned project-based work

Program Administration:

  • Oversees all aspects of general shelter program administration
  • Under the general direction of the Chief Program Officer with latitude for independent judgment and initiative, the Director of Shelter Services is responsible for a portfolio of shelter initiatives responsible for moving homeless families to permanency.
  • S/he will support the development and implementation of new initiatives to ensure compliance with moving clients to permanency; ensure that sites are in compliance with regulatory agency standards to the maximum extent possible monitor timely submission, accuracy, and appropriateness of responses to regulatory agency inspection reports and follow-up on implementation of corrective actions.  
  • The incumbent will ensure that appropriate and comprehensive social services are being offered to families in shelter. 
  • S/he will also ensure coordination with executive personnel, external providers, and DHS to provide clients with support and resources needed for permanency.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with social services and other departments.
  • Works diplomatically to solve problems in the social services department and facility. producing, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual progress reports.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • A Master’s Degree from an accredited college in the field of Human Services, Public Administration, Public Health and/or Social Work. 

EXPERIENCE  

  • 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in an emergency shelter, social services and/or housing is required. 
  • Direct client/participant services preferred. 
  • Project management experience with the ability to manage multiple, high priority projects.
  • Capable of working on projects independently as well as working well as part of a team. 
  • Exceptional attention to detail.

SKILLS

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills. 
  • Employee must be proficient in written and oral English; Written and oral Spanish proficiency is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic computer systems.

Locations: Bronx

Salary: $115,000-$120,000 Annually

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, use hands or fingers, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, kneel, talk, or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10-15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and distance vision. Must be able to travel within the five boroughs of New York City using all modes of public transportation.
