Training & Development Specialist

About The Role

Reporting directly to the VP of Human Resources, the Training and Development Specialist is responsible for coordinating, developing, facilitating, and supporting learning and development initiatives across the organization. This position plays a key role in ensuring employees receive the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to succeed while supporting leadership development, onboarding, compliance training, and employee growth.


The Training and Development Specialist partners with HR leadership and departmental leaders to assess training needs, develop engaging learning content, coordinate training programs, and monitor employee participation and effectiveness. This role supports a culture of continuous learning and professional development while ensuring compliance with organizational, contractual, and regulatory training requirements.


 The ideal candidate will have a passion for learning and development, strong facilitation skills, and experience in curriculum design tailored to diverse employee populations in a nonprofit or social services setting. This role ensures that employees are engaged, supported, and continuously developed, thereby contributing to the company's overall success. 

What You'll Do

  

  • Design and deliver engaging training programs that align with HSNY’s mission, values, and operational needs.
  • Coordinate and facilitate instructor-led, virtual, and blended learning programs.
  • Assist in developing and updating training curricula, facilitator guides, presentations, job aids, and learning resources.
  • Research and recommend innovative learning methods and training solutions.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through assessments, surveys, observations, and performance outcomes.
  • Partner with the HR team to facilitate new hire orientation.
  • Conduct onboarding check-ins with employees and managers to support successful transitions.
  • Assist employees with accessing required training and learning resources.
  • Partner with TA to support career development initiatives by identifying learning opportunities and available resources.
  • Assist with mentorship, succession planning, and internal development programs.
  • Coordinate required compliance training including harassment prevention, workplace safety, and agency-specific requirements.
  • Monitor training completion rates and follow up with employees and managers regarding outstanding requirements.
  • Maintain accurate training records and documentation.
  • Ensure training programs comply with applicable federal, state, local, funding source, and organizational requirements.
  • Coordinate logistics for all employee development activities, including scheduling, materials, room reservations, technology, and supplies.
  • Maintain training databases, attendance records, evaluations, and reports.
  • Assist with employee engagement initiatives and surveys.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly training reports and metrics for HR leadership.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to identify skill gaps and development opportunities.
  • Support special HR projects and organizational initiatives.
  • Develop and lead training on management development, soft skills, compliance, and operational best practices.
  • Partner with VP of HR and subject matter experts to create and update training materials.
  • Provide employees with guidance on accessing and completing assigned learning modules.
  • Develop curriculum and design training courses, while managing the learning experience consistent with agency person centered thinking philosophy.
  • Administer training with the ability to deliver, project, and motivate trainees through effective training methodologies both in group and individual training dynamics.
  • Implement various learning methods companywide (e.g., coaching, job-shadowing, online training)
  • Development and maintain an annual training calendar.
  • Designs and Implements Employee Performance Evaluation process. 
  • Develop training manuals and job aids that target tangible results.
  • Conducts follow-up studies and assessments of all completed training to evaluate and measure results.
  • Exemplifies the desired culture and philosophies of the organization.
  • Maximize all opportunities to develop staff based on past and live data.
  • Conducts all training (e.g., professional conduct, handling performance issues, conflict resolution, policies, and pitfalls, etc.)
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Education, or related field.

PREFERRED/ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) credential preferred.

EXPERIENCE  

  • 2+ years of experience in training, instructional design, or talent development.
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, and communication skills.

SKILLS

  • Knowledge of Adult Learning Principles, instructional design, and leadership development. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Thorough understanding of state and federal laws concerning labor relations.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, ordinances, and policies.
  • Strategic and creative mindset.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain tactful, calm, and persuasive in controversial and/or confrontational situations.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Adept with a variety of multimedia training platforms and methods.
  • Ability to evaluate and research training options and alternatives.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects. 

Location: Bronx

Salary: $70,000-$75,000 Annually

Adheres to Housing Solutions of New York Policies and Procedures. Acts as a role model within and outside the agency. Performs duties as workload necessitates.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, use hands or fingers, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, kneel, talk, or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10-15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and distance vision. Must be able to travel within the five boroughs of New York City using all modes of public transportation.
